Boston Lodge, Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways

Gwynedd, United Kingdom

The Ffestiniog Railway is a narrow-gauge, heritage railway in Gwynedd, Wales, running for over thirteen miles. Having operated for nearly two hundred years, it is now a major tourist attraction in the area and an integral part of the Slate Landscape of North Wales UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Boston Lodge is the location of the railway’s main workshops, engine sheds and works offices. Within the works are two cottages, used for various purposes by railway staff and volunteers.

As part of a significant regeneration project, partially supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Thorlux Lighting worked with Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways for two years to comprehensively re-light buildings and outdoor spaces with a mixture of energy-efficient LED luminaires. Appropriately, a number of the luminaires used include the spun-steel Thorlux Heritage Traditional luminaires, which combine modern LED lamp technology with a vintage 1930s design and high-quality vitreous enamel finishes. Furthermore, high-performance Thorlux Realta and Realta Micro luminaires have illuminated building perimeters across the site, chosen for their performance and minimal upward light. The workshop areas utilise heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant Pitlight luminaires for use beneath carriages and engines.

Importantly, Thorlux has supplied a fully compliant emergency lighting system using Platform 1 of the SmartScan lighting management system. This enables site managers to control, test, and retrieve data from the emergency luminaires using a hand-held SmartScan programmer device.

Besides developing resources and storytelling features for visitors, the Boston Lodge project has restored five historic buildings and established four new ones, including renovating the existing cottages to provide improved facilities and recreating a historical waggon repair shed. With high-quality lighting in place, Boston Lodge is ready for the next generation of visitors to discover.
