Peckham Library

London, United Kingdom

Situated in the London Borough of Southwark, Peckham Library is a public library and community building that has served the local community since opening in 2000. The distinctive, inverted L-shaped building was conceived as part of a £265m regeneration package for the area and received the Stirling Prize for Architecture shortly after its opening.

As part of a six-month refurbishment in 2023 to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, Thorlux Lighting was engaged to supply new, energy-efficient luminaires equipped with the SmartScan lighting management system. The library’s refurbishment also included a new heating and ventilation system and an upgraded power supply.

Installation of the award-winning Thorlux SmartScan lighting management system has provided building managers with unparalleled monitoring of their lighting usage and performance. The wireless system uploads and stores this information via a secure web platform.

The library now features a wide selection of Thorlux SmartScan and SmartScan Emergency luminaires throughout the building. Circular Clara pendant luminaires form a striking focal point in the library’s main reading room and reception area. The spaces beneath the library’s distinctive elevated ‘pods’ are lit with surface-mounted opal Glodome luminaires to ensure sufficient diffuse light levels.

The result of this refit is a modern, energy-efficient building that will continue to serve the residents of Peckham for many years to come.
